Two dreamers who hope to break onto the music scene but get into a world of trouble, are returning to Motovun. Dudes, directed in 2001 by Serbian director Radivoje Andrić, was a huge regional hit and one of the main attractions at the third edition of Motovun Film Festival. Twenty-two years later, Pop and Mare are back in action in the sequel to the classic, titled Dudes: Again! which will be screening at this year’s Cinehill Motovun.
Dudes from 2001 was a smash hit at the box offices with a story about Pop and Mare’s crazy night in which the couple of musicians try to persuade Gojko, a former colleague from school, to publish their record. The only problem is that Gojko is now a tough dude who still remembers how the two used to make fun of him in school.
Ushering in a blast of fresh energy at the start of the new millennium, Dudes quickly became an audience favourite, owing no small part of its success to the soundtrack featuring the coolest acts on the music scene at the time. The urban comedy justified its tagline ‘the first Serbian drum’n’bass’ by showcasing a long list of acclaimed musicians such as Darkwood Dub and supergroup Neočekivana sila koja se iznenada pojavljuje i rešava stvar.
In the new instalment of Dudes, the years have flown by but Pop and Mare seem to be pretty much where we left them: with no girls and no money, and at odds with the world and the new music pervading the scene. But when Gojko steals a part of their old hit to offer it to the pop singer Mila Sila, the duo head out to face him and another unforgettable adventure ensues.
The cast is made up of familiar faces Sergej Trifunović, Boris Milivojević, Nikola Đuričko and Jelisaveta Seka Sablić, along with rappers Ivan Ivanović Juice and Smoke Mardeljano. Apart from an original and entertaining story, Dudes: Again! again contains its trademark music created by acts the likes of Prti Bee Gee and Hornsman Coyote, Vizelj, Coby, Baby Motorola and many others.
Next to the screening of Dudes: Again!, Motovun will throw a repeat screening of the first instalment of Dudes created 22 years ago. The film’s Croatian premiere happened precisely at the 2001 Motovun FF, with director Radivoje Andrić and actor Sergej Trifunović in attendance. Director and cast will be arriving in Motovun once again to celebrate our 25th edition and the end of a festival era together.
