Roy Andersson’s feature debut is a sunny, optimistic film about love between two youths, Annika and Pär. In the background is the adult world, dull, stagnant, almost oppressive. Andersson depicts 1960s Sweden and the disappointment over the welfare state and the hope for things new. The film premiered in Berlin and was screened all over the world. It was commercially successful in its time and is considered one of the best Swedish films of all time by critics.
