Vic, a hapless young Russian American, drives a handicapped transportation vehicle in Mi lwaukee. Already running late on a day when street protests have broken out, and on the verge of being fired, he reluctantly agrees to ferry his grandfather and a dozen elderly Russians to a funeral. And when he stops in a predominantly African American ne ighborhood to pick up Tracy, a woman with motor neuron disease, Vic’s day goes from bad to worse. Inspired by experiences from his own youth, Kirill Mikhanovsky delivers a touching and life – affirming comedy about marginalized characters encountering literal and figurative roadblocks. His descent into the madness of a modern American town explores the city’s complex immigrant communities, racial tensions and working – class frustrations. A charming look at ordi nary people and a “rigged system”, Give Me Liberty has a flavor of the Czech New Wave, mixing a wry dissent, handheld camera and jittery editing style, with nonprofessional actors and unscripted moments
