The Night Is Just Beginning: Swedish Music on the Big Screen

Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog

In honor of Sweden, this year’s partner country, Motovun film nights will be topped by midnight screenings of three singular films. Three different eras and three different genres, united by the universal connection that doesn’t require any knowledge of Swedish – music.

The silent-era cult horror film Häxan – Witchcraft through the Ages was made one hundred years ago, when its provocative scenes depicting the occult, torture and sexuality, inspired by the art of Hieronymus Bosch, proved to be too much for its contemporaries and their sensibilities. The film was considered blasphemic and was censored. To ensure the real horror experience, we are screening the version of the film with William S. Burroughs as the narrator, along with the live musical accompaniment by Alen and Nenad Sinkauz, who wrote the score for this silent masterpiece just for this occasion. You can read more about the event in the section Horror Night with the Sinkauz Brothers.
28/7 THURSDAY 23:30 CINEMA BILLY

Sound of Noise is one of the most original and wackiest contemporary Swedish films. It is a crime comedy about guerilla musicians who, in a fascinating musical blitzkrieg, perform carefully planned illegal concerts in the most unusual, and most forbidden, places. Blurring the line between art and vandalism, this film guarantees great entertainment and even better music.
27/7 WEDNESDAY 23:30 CINEMA BILLY

ABBA: The Movie is an ode to Sweden’s trademark and the biggest export of their indomitable music industry. ABBA was captured on the movie screen only once, in the documentary filmed during ABBA’s mega-successful tour of Australia in 1977. The film will take you on a flashback journey to the 70s, when disco reigned supreme and ABBA were royalty. Showing what happens when the stage lights go out and including some of ABBA’s greatest hits, the film provides a rare look at the hugely successful band during the height of their popularity. It is a karaoke screening, which means that everyone’s invited to join the live sing-along during the screening! Let’s sing with ABBA!
