God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya

This Macedonian black comedy and satire directed by Teona Strugar Mitevska, awarded by the Ecumenical Jury at Berlinale and based on a true story tells us about a woman who challenges old traditions. Every January, a local priest throws a wooden cross into a river and hundreds of men jump to the river to recover it. According to a legend, the one who brings it up will have a good fortune and success. This time, the nondescript Petrunya also plunges into the river and manages to find it before the others. The men are furious and chaos breaks lose, but Petrunya holds her ground. The film questions the democratic changes in the Macedonian society, condemning the behavior of the church, judiciary and media.
